Spare a thought for the ones that lost more than they deserved. Everyone will experience loss within their lives but when it hits, it always seems unexpected. It has been a week since the bushfires were at its climax. It roared through towns as though buildings were made from paper. It burnt hectares upon hectares of bushland leaving only a path of blackened ruin behind. Families were forced to evacuate their homes whilst some chose to stay and fight – such is the fighting spirit of the people. We witnessed heroic efforts from the volunteers who worked unending shifts to simply battle, all the while hoping that there was some end in sight. We watched, we prayed, we contribute.

But in the midst of chaos stems hope. No one ever walks away from disaster without gaining something. Anger would be amongst the last things anyone would feel. We saw people come together to help communities facing the worst. We saw people donate food, money, clothing and even cars to the ones that needed it the most. We saw people hold out their hand and help a stranger off the ground as though they were friends since childhood. We witnessed people at their very best – digging deep to inspire those that had almost lost all. And although all that remains is a land cleared bare, we see examples of what it could be like to love everyone around us.
