Family Rules

They are facts not because someone said so, but because once upon a time one great mind decided that this was the right way to treat loved ones. Eventually this lore blossomed to what we call the unwritten ground rules within a family. But when you look into it deeper, why do we refer to them as the unwritten rules? It is unwritten because many of these actions, compromises and agreements come from a place deep within (hopefully somewhere in the region where the heart and soul and conscience lie). But it seems that over time the unwritten rules started to lose its effect upon us because the exposure to desires and greed and selfishness blurred the lines between what was always meant to be right and what we thought was right.

And so the story continues until one day another great mind decided to rewrite these sacred unwritten ground rules onto parchment, and share it with the people who had long forgotten that they ever existed. One thing you need to understand is that these rules evolved over time. People realised that the rules should be dynamic enough to adapt to cater for different environments. They named them weird things but when you perform a deep dive to find its essence, you start to realise that most people are endorsing the same things that aim to remind us of how great we once were and how great we can be.

We came across a display that had the words ‘Family Rules’ printed on the top of it. And although the word ‘rule’ implies something that is stern and strict, the words that were listed below them were not. So it led us to believe that having rules (written or not) was a good thing so long as you tried your best to comply with them. Some of the lines that really caught our attention were:

Share

Do your Best

Say I Love You

Be Thankful

Be Happy

Dream Big

Laugh out Loud

Be Grateful

Hug Often

We sat there for some time thinking whether these were actually things that people needed to be reminded of? I mean most of these things, if not all, should be the types of things we already do on a daily basis. But too often do we see people being too busy with other commitments that they fail to stop and realise the basic courtesies that should be extended to anyone and everyone. All we want to say is don’t rely on a sign to remind you of how great you are. Don’t wait till your opportunities run dry. Don’t wait till someone taps you on your shoulder and tells you that you have broken these rules. Take a step, do what is right, and do it with a big silly smile. Take care.
